In 2003 Habanos S.A. released the Combinacciones Selección Robustos 5s case. This case contains five robustos of the most well known Habanos brands including Montecristo, Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta, Hoyo de Monterrey and Partagas.

The Romeo y Julieta and Montecristo robustos are only available in the Selección Robusto case and are not included as a standard offering. The Selección Robusto case is totally handmade with specially selected leaves from the region of Vuelta Abajo. The robusto vitola (124mm x 50 ring gauge) has been one of the most popular sizes released from Habanos and for the review we’ll look a little closer at the Montecristo Robustos.

It was Earth Hour 2008 and many households had switched their lights off between 8-9pm. This seemed as good a reason as any to sit outside and review the Montecristo Robustos. Accompanying this smoke was one of my favourite reds, the Evans & Tate 2005 Margaret River Cabernet Merlot.

The appearance and construction of the Montecristo Robustos is typical of the brand as it presents beautifully with its flawless construction and caramel brown oily wrapper. I cut the head with my twin blade cutter and lit the foot once again using my now loved Vector Tri Pump butane table lighter. From the outset this cigar drew well offering generous amounts of spicy and peppery smoke. The ash was solid with white tinges that remained reluctant to fall at all times. The second and final third of this cigar gave us a glimpse of what this cigar really had to offer. Increasing in strength it gave volumes of rich smoke, full of bitter sweet spice. There’s no doubt this cigars character will also be enhanced if aged.

The Montecristo Robustos is an exceptional Cuban cigar that will also improve with age and is well worth consideration. Part of the appeal of the Selección Robustos Case is the fact that the Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta robustos are not available outside this release. I’m also fond of the fact that the case has a built in humidifier that’s perfect for maintaining constant humidity whilst travelling. I enjoyed the Montecristo Robustos thoroughly and rate it 8/10.
