The Cohiba Maduro 5 incorporates a new concept for Habanos as it utilises the highest grade Cuban grown maduro wrapper leaf. With a stunning dark shade the character of this tobacco is achieved during its five year aging process. This unique colour and texture is obtained through a process that is chemical free. This of course can’t be said for many of the non Cuban maduro brands. The tobacco used in the making of all Cohiba cigars comes from the five best tobacco farms of the Vuelta Abajo region. In addition Cohiba is the only Cuban brand in which two of the three types of leaves used to make them (seco and ligero) are given a third fermentation.

This fermentation process gives Cohiba a unique aroma and taste not found in other Cuban cigar brands.  A black band featuring “Maduro 5″ in gold type along with the traditional Cohiba ring contrasts the delicious maduro wrapper. Incorporating the Maduro 5 line are three sizes: Genios (140mm x 52 ring gauge); Magicos (115mm x 52 ring gauge), and Secretos (110mm x 40 ring gauge). For the review we’ll turn our focus onto the smallest of three vitolas; the Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos. My drink of choice for the review was the equally impressive 2005 Penfolds Thomas Hyland Cabernet Sauvignon. The construction and appearance of the Secretos is first class. I cut the Secretos foot with my twin blade cutter and toasted the head with my Vector Tripump triple jet lighter. The draw from the beginning was maintenance free with the flavour oozing cedar, spice and cocoa. These flavours remain during the second third of the cigars life as the aroma intensifies. Dominating my palate are the same traits of chocolate, wood  and pepper and this cigar doesn’t disappoint during its final third. The ash is firm and draw consistent and both factors convince me this cigar is well worth its asking price. With patience and a little aging this cigar displays fantastic potential!

The Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos is the smallest of the three vitolas but still offers full bodied flavour and character. Perhaps the Secretos is overshadowed by the acclaim received by its bigger brother the Maduro 5 Genios. Still the Cohiba Maduro 5 Secretos left us wanting more! The Secretos is a top shelf Cuban cigar that will improve with age and scores a 9/10!
