In 2003 Habanos S.A. released the Combinacciones Selección Piramides 5s case. This case contains five piramides of the most well known Habanos brands including Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Partagás and Hoyo de Monterrey.

This vitola measures 156 mm in length with a ring gauge of 52 and is currently available under the Montecristo banner as the Montecristo No.2. For the other four brands however this vitola is only available in the Combinacciones Selección Piramides case which incidentally also contains a humidifier to help maintain optimal storage conditions. For the review we’ll focus on the Cohiba Piramide which as previously mentioned is only available in the Combinacciones Seleccion Piramides 5s case.

Partnering this cigar for the review is the Rymill ‘The Yearling’ Coonawarra 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon. What now seems common practice with the Cohiba brand is mirrored here as the construction and appearance of the torpedo is first class.

The beautiful caramel brown wrapper is one of the main traits adding to this cigars appeal. The head was cut using a CC cutter and the cigar lit easily using a single jet lighter. Instantly it offered volumes of creamy, smooth Cohiba smoke with faultless combustion. The melody of spice, leather and pepper combine to give us that unique Cohiba taste. During the second third the spiciness drops off a little as the fullness of the cigar peaks. This is definitely a full bodied smoke and probably not for those that prefer a light, mellow cigar! For the final third a little of the spiciness returns and yet the smoke remains smooth and creamy. The ash remained firm for the duration of the smoke and at times was dark grey in colour.

We’re probably a little biased and have suggested many times in the past that from a personal perspective we prefer the Cohiba brand above all other Habanos brands. The Cohiba Piramides is no different and was thoroughly enjoyed.  We rate this torpedo up with the best from Habanos and score it 8/10!
