The Hoyo de Monterrey Regalos Limited Edition was released by Habanos in 2007 and is presented in an unvarnished slide lid box of 25 cigars in two layers. The Regalos, as with all limited edition Habanos cigars, are not part of the usual range of the Hoyo de Monterrey brand. The careful selection of a two year aged wrapper from the upper level of the Cuban plant gives this release a darker colour which sets them apart from other HDM cigars. Binder and filler leaves used for the making of these limited edition cigars have also been aged for two years adding to its character. Having said that we had certainly looked forward to reviewing the HDM Regalos and partnering the Regalos for the review was ’The Yearling’ 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Rymill. 

The Hoyo de Monterrey Regalos certainly offers plenty of visual appeal with its stunning dark wrapper and regal gold and black limited edition band. The structure of this cigar is perfect and if the smell was an indicator of what was to come then good times with this cigar were certainly ahead! The cigar lit easily and instantly gave copious amounts of creamy Cuban smoke filled with flavours of espresso and chocolate. For the second third these flavours remain and perhaps intensify without bitterness to the very end. The Regalos can be described as a full flavoured medium bodied cigar offering fantastic complexity. The Regalos offers many of the same characteristics as the Hoyo de Monterrey Piramide LE 2003. If you enjoyed the HDM Piramide then the Regalos is certainly worth consideration.

This cigar is highly regarded and is the epitome of what a Cuban cigar should be; rich, complex and wonderfully consistent. The HDM Regalos is destined to become a Cuban classic and we rate it a mighty 9/10!
