Juan Cano Sainz and his wife lived above their warehouse on 39 Bernaza Street in Old Havana, Cuba. Their three children were all born in this house and after a while shifted to a town house on the corner of Teniente Rey and Bernaza Street; the birthplace of La Flor de Cano. In 1932 Juan hired a cigar maker to roll cigars on his kitchen table. Sales increased quickly and a second cigar maker was hired to keep up with growing demand. As his customer base continued to grow Juan established his own company and created a brand under his family’s name; La Flor de Cano. The brand gained its esteemed reputation in the 1980s by offering brilliantly crafted cigars made from the finest tobacco.

La Flor de Cano is still made in limited production quantities which could ultimately lead to its extinction. The world of Havana cigars would lose part of its soul without its presence. Today the La Flor de Cano Petit Corona is a machine made, mild, short filler cigar suitable for the novice smoker. Partnering this Petit Corona for the review is the magnificent 2004 Tapestry Cabernet Sauvignon from McLaren Vale S.A. The Petit Corona comes wrapped in Spanish cedar and seems to be well constructed. The cigar lit easily with an even, consistent burn throughout the life of the smoke. The initial aroma is very pleasant and the flavours included hints of cedar, coffee and floral notes. These great flavours stayed until the end with very little variation.

The La Flor de Cano Petit Corona is a mild cigar which offers good value for money. For around $7.00 per stick you get tasty, consistent Cuban flavours! Recommended for the beginner or handing out to family and friends! We score the Petit Corona a 6.5/10.
